Colubris rolls out unified WLAN/LAN architecture

Colubris Networks Inc. of Waltham this week unveiled its upcoming product and service strategy with the intention of being the first wireless local area network (WLAN) vendor to unify wireless and wired networks under the same architecture, dubbed the Unified Services Network.

In announcing the new unified architecture, Colubris executives also provided a sneak peak of two new complementary products to be released some time this summer. The first, which the company claims will be an industry first, is its MultiService Controller. The controller, when incorporated with an Ethernet switch in legacy networks, is designed to provide a distributed WLAN/LAN switching platform. This would also include quality-of-services monitoring and security and roaming applications, according to Colubris.

The other complementary produce is a unified edge switch, which is designed to integrate the wireless network and the system’s switching processor and software. According to the company, the complete unified system has already been deployed in the retail stores and corporate offices of Gander Mountain Co., an outdoor clothing and equipment retailer based in St. Paul, Minn.

The company has not yet released pricing information for the new products.
