Colubris Networks, the leading global provider of intelligent wireless LANs (WLANs) for enterprises and service providers, today announced that its award-winning solutions have been deployed campus-wide by George Mason University. Located in Virginia’s technology corridor, the University’s goal is to provide ubiquitous wireless network access to its approximately 30,000 students. Colubris solutions are deployed throughout its student housing, remote sites, and three campuses spanning four counties, including the prestigious George Mason School of Law, one of the nation’s top law schools.
The University selected the Colubris solution based on its superior reliability, “future-proof” support for high user densities, support for multiple services, high network capacity, and easy migration from legacy equipment and WLAN standards. The flexibility built into Colubris MultiService Access Points (MAPs) enables the University to cap its investment in legacy APs and aggressively grow its wireless network.
“Colubris solutions consistently deliver exceptional performance, despite extremely high densities, widely varying client equipment, and ever-changing sources of interference that characterize large universities,” noted Derek Kan, manager of advanced network technologies for George Mason University’s Information Technology Unit. “Colubris is a truly reliable, future-proof solution that supports both our aggressive near-term coverage goals and our potential longer-term enterprise services strategies.”
The Colubris solution spans approximately 200 dual radio MAPs deployed indoors and outdoors throughout the original campus in Fairfax, VA, the Arlington Law and Public Policy campus, the Prince William Biotech campus, the Loudon campus, and the University’s recently acquired off-campus student housing. Off-campus WLAN extensions leverage the MAPs’ built-in support for Wireless Distribution System (WDS) and 802.11a, enabling the University to provide high-performance, interference-free WLAN access without investing in costly remote telecommunications links.
“Software selectable support for the a, b and g bands and a very robust WDS implementation give us superior deployment flexibility while keeping costs under control,” added Kan. “To date, approximately 25% of the main George Mason University campus area has Wi-Fi coverage, and we’re actively extending wireless to additional areas. Our next major focus is providing ubiquitous coverage in all student residence halls.”
