Colubris Networks, Inc., the leading global provider of intelligent wireless LANs (WLANs) for enterprises and service providers, today announced that PCCW IMS Limited (PCCW), Hong Kongs premier telecommunications company, has chosen Colubris WLAN equipment to provide Wi-Fi services to commuters in the waiting and boarding areas of Hong Kongs subway system. Serving more than 2.5 million passengers each weekday, Hong Kongs subway system, the MTR, is one of the most heavily traveled mass transit systems in the world. To enable MTR patrons to benefit from easy-to-use, uninterrupted, secure Internet access, PCCW has installed Wi-Fi hotspots at selected MTR stations. PCCW will ultimately deploy hundreds of Colubris MultiService Access Points as the network expands to 16 MTR stations by the end of this year. After an extensive evaluation, PCCW selected WLAN technology from Colubris to power this initiative. Built to seamlessly integrate with service providers back-end systems, the components of Colubris Wi-Fi solution allow PCCW to easily deploy the infrastructure and quickly roll out its new PCCW Wi-Fi and NETVIGATOR Everywhere services. PCCW was also impressed with the configuration options and scalability of Colubris infrastructure, which will allow the telecommunication service provider to extend its services to other MTR locations. We were impressed with Colubris track record of providing high-performance, reliable and secure WLAN services to the transportation industry – in Asia-Pacific and worldwide – making the company an ideal partner for this deployment, said Dr. Allen Wong, director of product development and management of PCCW. The new hotspot services will further bring the convenience of wireless connectivity to Hong Kong residents and visitors, enhancing their overall online experience at MTR stations throughout the city. Ideally designed for transportation environments and currently installed on leading trains, bus lines and aircraft, Colubris products contain solid metal enclosures that provide the rugged construction necessary to deliver reliable network performance even in the most demanding conditions. In addition, the companys access points are fully certified with European transportation industry standards, including IEC 61373 for Railway Rolling Stock and UL 2043, the fire and fumes standard. Transportation organizations around the globe continue to recognize the benefits of WLANs to provide new, differentiated services to passengers in order to make their travels more enjoyable and convenient, said Rob Scott, president and CEO of Colubris. Colubris continues to deliver innovative, customized solutions that meet the stringent quality, safety and performance requirements of todays transportation systems operators. About Colubris
