Today, uLocate Communications announced that ten of the fifteen applications selected as semi-finalists in the 2008 NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge Americas were built on WHERE. These semi-finalists used the WHERE Developer Program to turn creative ideas into mobile location based applications. The semi-finalists have the opportunity to win from a prize pool of $3 million (U.S.) and immediately reach consumers across multiple carriers through WHERE. First launched in North America in October 2003, the annual NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge invites developers to build mobile location-enabled applications using dynamic location technology and NAVTEQ® map data. Participants compete for a global prize pool of cash, licenses and services from NAVTEQ and sponsors of the event. The WHERE Developer Program provides developers with simple, powerful tools to create and launch location-enabled applications. WHERE has been adopted by virtually all North American carriers eliminating development complexity of porting across multiple operating systems, handsets, and working through the carrier certification process. “With their ability to aggregate location-based content, WHERE proved to be a tremendous asset to developers in this year’s NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge,” said Marc Naddell, Vice President, Partner and Developer Programs, NAVTEQ. “Their offering simplifies the process for creating innovative location-based applications and distributing them on multiple carriers.” The 2008 NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge Americas semi-finalist applications built on WHERE are: AEN Mobile: Real time emergency information Game Park: Location-based multi-player gaming HeyWhatsThat: Interactive views of mountain peaks and skylines POI Cruiser: Find local businesses on a color-coded grid Proxido: Set location-based reminders for yourself SportsTalk: Fans chat, share, or trash talk the opposing team Trapster: Report and share speed-traps and hidden cameras UMI Transit: Detailed public transportation information and maps WildLab: Tag and share sightings of bird species ZooM: Map and schedule visits between businesses and customers We congratulate this years NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge semifinalists who built their application on WHERE, said Matt Gross, General Manager, WHERE Developer Programs.
