Waltham, Mass., May 19, 2003 – Colubris Networks Inc., a global provider of 802.11 (Wi-Fi) wireless networking solutions for operators of large carrier hot spot and enterprise networks, today announced a partnership with Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR) for the development and marketing of carrier-class Public Wireless LAN (PWLAN) solutions based on Colubris Networks’ access devices. The new integrated solution enables operators to immediately offer scaleable hot spot services and use the most economic backhaul technology available to connect the hot spots with Juniper Networks E-series platforms and the SDX-300 Service Deployment System.
Many of today’s PWLAN solutions use feature-constrained access points and gateways that are deployed, configured, and managed at each and every hot spot. The resulting distributed network increases service provider costs and management complexity. In contrast, the PWLAN solution developed by the Juniper Networks and Colubris Networks partnership consolidates user authentication and service creation into fewer platforms that are deployed and managed centrally as an integral part of the carrier’s Internet Protocol network. Complexity and cost are greatly reduced and enhanced services, such as guaranteed bandwidth, secure virtual private networks, and premium location and streaming content can be extended to the PWLAN.
Colubris Networks’ CN3000 line of PWLAN solutions incorporates access point and access control features into one tightly integrated and cost-effective solution. In combination with the Juniper Networks E-series platform and SDX-300 Service Deployment System, it creates a network that is highly scalable, secure, and enables service providers to rapidly and seamlessly deploy PWLAN services, while leveraging their existing infrastructure.
Operators benefit from the partnership’s solution by: eliminating the cost of complex gateways at each hot spot; adding flexibility to use any transport technology available; and enabling a rich set of PWLAN services. The solution implements the same layered architecture that service providers use throughout their IP networks and is aligned with the Juniper Networks Model for Integrated Network Transformation (MINT), which enables companies to transition from a commodity transport business model to a more lucrative, value-added services model. Hot spots that use Colubris Networks’ intelligent access devices can connect to Juniper Networks PWLAN services not only over digital subscriber line, cable, and leased line backhaul, but also over IP networks, including the Internet.
“Colubris Networks is a front runner in bringing innovation to the hot spot networking industry and enabling carriers to save capital expenditures, as well as ongoing operational costs, by eliminating complex gateways,” said Tony Scarfo, Director of New Market Development at Juniper Networks. “The key issues in achieving this deployment efficiency include removing the gateway, leveraging existing broadband networks and delivering subscriber management from consolidated platforms in the service provider’s network.”
“Public Wireless LAN is about efficiently adding wireless hot spots to existing networks, not about forcing network operators to make new investments in overlay networks,” said Jim Ciociolo, Vice President of Business Development and Carrier Sales for Colubris Networks. “Juniper Networks clearly understands, particularly in this economic climate, that return on investment for service providers is about both the top and the bottom line. Juniper Networks is a partner that is currently delivering high-value, broadband solutions for service providers worldwide. The Juniper Networks and Colubris Networks PWLAN solution enables these service providers to effectively roll-out new wireless services that leverage existing carrier infrastructure to provide immediate revenue and return on investment.”
