OutStart, the leading provider of eKnowledge software solutions for learning and knowledge-sharing, today announced that OutStart Evolution LCMS is the first LCMS to produce certified SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) 2004 3rd Edition content. SCORM 2004 is the de facto e-learning standard for interchanging learning content between compliant LMS and LCMS systems. OutStart has been an ardent supporter of ADL standards with its recent release of OutStart Evolution LCMS for the ADL Registry. Evolution LCMS was also one of the first to produce SCORM 2004 certified content more than 18 months ago. Certification for the latest edition of SCORM allows OutStart customers in the military and government agencies the benefits of scalable, reusable, sharable course content; the ability to find and move entire courses; and, the development of adaptive learning systems that can assemble content to meet learners needs on the fly. SCORM 2004 3rd Edition builds upon past releases and continues to solidify its collection of specifications and standards to provide a comprehensive suite of e-learning capabilities that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of Web-based learning content. As the LCMS leader in the defense industry, OutStart continues to innovate and extend support to the DoD/federal SCORM community and are committed to supporting all standards set by the ADL, said Massood Zarrabian, president and CEO of OutStart. SCORM 2004 3rd edition will make it even easier for our customers to share knowledge and reuse compelling content to improve developer productivity and deliver rich and productive experiences to learners. How it Works
Since 2000, OutStart has aggressively supported the SCORM standard. OutStart Evolution LCMS goes well beyond the delivery of SCORM content to allow customers the benefits of rapid authoring, editing and managing content while protecting their existing investments. OutStart Evolution LCMS also manages all of the administration associated with training. With all SCORM certification, Evolution LCMS can ingest existing legacy content or 3rd party courseware from disparate sources and transform it into SCORM 2004 3rd edition compliant content that can be delivered to multiple channels. OutStart Evolution LCMS is a complete SCORM content management tool. Its capabilities include: * SCORM Repository — a robust multi-user server environment manages all SCORM content. The Evolution repository can handle SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 content. The architecture is defined to allow for future support of SCORM extensions and additions. The repository provides complete version and access control to all SCORM objects and assets.
* SCORM 1.2 to 2004 conversion — SCORM content within the Evolution LCMS repository can be converted from 1.2 to 2004. This allows legacy SCORM content to coexist with the latest releases.
* SCORM metadata editing Evolution LCMS provides a robust metadata editor allowing it to be easily edited and added to existing SCORM objects. Users can import objects into the repository, regardless of where they were authored and edit properties within the platform.
* SCORM sequencing editing — Evolution LCMS allows users to edit the sequencing rules for SCORM packages. This is done through a user interface that does not require knowledge of XML. Users can choose to modify sequencing rules for existing packages, or add sequencing rules to packages.
* SCORM package assembly — since all SCORM objects and assets are stored in a repository, the user has the ability to create brand new packages and assemblies from the existing objects in the system. Using a simple web interface, users can create new packages from existing ones, re-using objects as needed.
* Integral conformance output Evolution LCMS exports content from the repository and ensures that the content generated passes the test suite by verifying that all needed components are present at the time of packaging. The process alleviates many of the repetitive attempts to get conformant content out of a system.
One of the chief benefits of adopting SCORM standardization is the reusability of e-learning content across courses and LMS and LCMS applications without proprietary constraints, said Bill Blackmon, chief technical officer for ADL. Now instructional designers are better able to create compelling e-learning content that will increase student retention and comprehension and decrease development cost and time. All of these benefits lead to the ultimate goal spreading knowledge and improving peoples job performance. About the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL)
The ADL Initiative, sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) is a collaborative effort, between government, industry, and academia to establish a new learning distribution environment that permits the interoperability of the learning tools and course content on a global scale. ADL promotes collaboration in the development and adoption of tools, specifications, guidelines, policies, and prototypes that make distributed learning accessible, adaptable, affordable, durable, interoperable and reusable.
